Meet The Team (PHD Students)

2018 PHD Student
Wanglong Gou
苟望龙
Wanglong joined Zheng Lab in 2018 as a PhD student. Before that, he received his Master's degree from Northwestern Polytechnical University. Wanglong has a mixed background in computational biology and pattern recognition. His research is focused on exploring the biomarkers and pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes by integrating multi-omics and machine learning. He is also paying particular attention to maternal and child health, and how it can support and engage communities in the realm of public health.

2018 PHD Student
Zelei Miao
苗泽蕾
Zelei joined Zheng Lab in 2018 as a PhD student. She received her M.P.H. from University of Sydney (Sydney, Australia) and her B.S. in Health Inspection from Sichuan University (Chengdu, China). Zelei’s research has focused on the role of polyunsaturated fatty acids biomarkers in prevention of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

2018 PHD Student
Fengzhe Xu
许凤喆
Fengzhe is a PhD student and majors in bioinformatics. She got her bachelor degree of Life Science in China Agricultural University. She has completed the first batch of microbiome genomic-wide association analysis in the Chinese populations. Nowadays, she works at using genetic variants as a tool to explore the effect of clinical traits on gut microbiome, protein and metabolites, and exploring the potential mechanism. She hopes that her work could help understand the interplay between host metabolism and gut microbiome, and provide the novel biomarkers or suggestions for clinical practice.

2018 PHD Student
Menglei Shuai
帅梦雷
Menglei is pursuing his PhD in the School of Life Sciences. His interest is in investigating the role of gut microbiome in the development of chronic disease, and the effects of diet-microbe interaction on cardiometabolic heath. Additionally, he is interested in developing the new methods to integrate the multi-omics and machine learning technology, digging deeper into the knowledge behind the metagenomic data.

2018 PHD Student
Yuhui Liang
梁玉慧
Yuhui completed her Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology at Shandong Normal University (Jinan, China) in 2018, and masters in biochemistry and molecular biology experimental techniques. Now, she focuses on vitamin D and related metabolites analysis and investigates the relationship between vitamin D and health, such as gut microbiota and type 2 diabetes at different levers in cells, animal model and human trial. She loves Westlake University because compared with other institutions of higher education, the Westlake University is really a young and vibrant university. She likes chatting and traveling with friends.

2019 PHD Student
Yunyi Tian
田韵仪
Yunyi is a PhD student in the School of Life Sciences. She received her MSc in Clinical and Public Health Nutrition from UCL (London, the United Kingdom), and her BSc in Food Science/Nutritional Science from McGill University (Montreal, Canada). She is also a UKVRN Registered Associate Nutritionist. Her primary interest is in investigating the association between the microbiome, dietary components and the subsequent consequences for human health. In particular, she aims to identify the role of gut microbiota in predicting response to diet in the hopes of furthering development of precision nutrition models.

2019 PHD Student
Xinxiu Liang
梁新袖
Xinxiu received her Bachelor of Medicine degree in Preventive Medicine from School of Public Health, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan China in June 2019. She become a PhD candidate of Zheng Lab at Westlake University since August of the same year.

2020 PHD Student
Congmei Xiao
肖丛梅
Congmei graduated from Zhejiang Chinese Medical University. She has worked in Zheng lab for one year as a research assistant for one year. Now she is mainly responsible for the analysis and determination of metabolic compounds in the lab.

2021 PHD Student
Ke Zhang
张柯
Ke Zhang is a PhD student in the School of Life Science. He received his Bachelor in Medical from Ningbo University (Zhejiang, China). His primary interest is the association between diet, cognitive function and human health from the perspective of microbiome-gut-brain axis.
